Parenting Tips on Keeping the Kids Safe

One pedophile described how he silenced the young girls he had raped by telling them he loved them; another molested a five year old while acting “grandfatherly” to her; a third talked about touching his daughter while she slept. He said he couldn’t stop the progressive abuse even after she asked. Another candidly described how as a pre-teen boy he began to manipulate an emotionally starved child and molest her – first by looking, and then by touching, and then by raping her, from the time she was a little until she was seventeen years old.

Two of the children found the courage to tell, but when confronted, the molester denied the accusations and explained away the child’s “confusion”. Shockingly, in both cases, the molester was believed over the child and even after being so close to getting caught, the abuse continued – with renewed vigilance and heightened confidence.

Although anyone, male or female, can be a sex offender, usually it’s someone with access to kids, like a babysitter or group leader, but often it’s a neighbor, close family friend or family member. Contrary to popular belief, sexual abuse crosses all racial, religious and socio-economic boundaries. And ALL children are at risk. In fact 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 7 boys will be molested.

How to Develop Fine Motor Skills for Young Children

Developing fine motor skills helps your children become ready for school. They need strength in their fingers, hands, shoulders, arms and core to become efficient and skilful at printing, painting etc.

Any time your children are using pencils, crayons, scissors, paint brushes or playing with play dough, they are developing their fine motor skills.

Sometimes, watch what they are doing and make suggestions on how to hold the pencil or crayon correctly or better yet, colour or draw along side of them so they begin to copy you.

Some games you could do at home include:

1. Give your child your kitchen tongs and a bowl filled with cotton balls. Place another bowl beside it and have your child move the cotton balls, using the tongs to move the cotton balls from one bowl to the other.

2. Use play dough. Have your child roll snakes and balls and introduce some tolls such as knives, potato ricer, cookie cutters for her to experiment with.

3. Give her some bubble wrap and get her to squeeze and pinch it.

4. Crumpling or tearing paper – try different types like tissue, newspaper, paper towel, junk mail, coffee filters etc.

Showing More Interest in the Kids

Are you a parent? If so, are you wondering how you can become closer with your kids without turning them off? If you answered affirmatively, this article is for you. You will learn suggestions for parents who want to show more interest in their children.

First: You should not be intrusive. Although it is important to learn more about your kids and what they are up to, it is not wise to invade their personal space or ask questions that are too personal.

Second: You have to be careful about asking your child about his day. If he never minds spilling the beans, go ahead and continue to ask. On the other hand, if he always replies that he did not do anything special, you should let it go because he is obviously uncomfortable about discussing what he did, even if he did nothing wrong.

Third: It is necessary to take advantage of any spare time you have. You should use it to do what you like with your kids; however, you should not try to force them to do activities that do not appeal to them.

Make Parenting Become Fun

When the child actually responds to your parenting skills, it can be very fun. It is also fun when the child becomes aware of her environment and learns the ways of humans. When a baby is born, she has no idea what world she is being born into. It is up to the parent to teach her the ways of the human race and what we consider proper behavior. This is the big responsibility of the parent. How the child adapts to what we call the real world is directly dependent on how well you as the parent have prepared her.

There are ways to help prepare for preparing a child for the real world. I have always said that parenting comes from the heart. Good parenting comes from keen observational skills. Excellent parenting comes from careful guiding the child in the direction in which she will naturally go. One must hope that this natural direction a good thing. Supposing it is, it will lead to the true happiness of the child. This is when parenting becomes fun. When you see a lifetime of parenting from the heart, keen observational skills, and careful guidance, then you see how your hard work paid off.
