The holidays are the perfect time to host a party. Everyone is already in a partying spirit and the theme is already chosen. To make it a unique party, put a spin on the traditional and you will have a party people will be talking about for a long time.

Holiday party planning may take a little more thought and planning than parties held at other times of year. Why is a little more effort needed? The reason is that during the holidays, people’s schedules begin to fill up with other parties or special events. If you decide to host a party at the last minute, you may find all your potential guests have other obligations and are unable to attend. And you don’t want your party to be just “another” party, do you? You want people to really enjoy themselves and even look forward to your next one. With a little extra thought, your party can be a little different, something unique, that will make your party the hit of the season.

Making your party stand out among all the others is not too hard to do. It could be something as simple as a special invitation. With all the scrapbooking supplies now available, it is easy to make your own. You probably even have most, if not all, the materials you need at home. Thanksgiving cards could be cut in the shape of autumn leaves or if you feel adventurous, buy preserved fall leaves at the craft store and write directly on them. Craft stores are brimming with ideas, no matter what the season. Stroll through one and look for ideas. It is sure to spark your imagination.

Decorate your party with something a little unusual or different. At Christmas there is usually a tree at every party. What about making a special, smaller version, with pictures of each one of the guests in a silver frame? These could double as party favors too! For a table try wrapping packages about 2″ x 1″ with metallic paper and suspend from a pair of candelabra with holiday ribbon. Set one candle holder at each end of the table and arrange a band of holly from one to the other.

Of course, during the holidays, people love to eat. Make some tried and true recipes but throw in a new or unusual one or two. Just be sure there is plenty. Nothing puts an end to a party faster than running out of food or drinks. Have a few unexpected items, too. For example, take a number of walnuts (how many is up to you), carefully crack them open take a piece of paper and write a fortune or funny saying on it, place it in one side of the walnut shell, carefully glue the two sides back together and hide a few of these in with a bowl of unshelled walnuts. It will be a surprise when a guest opens one and find a note inside instead of nutmeat. Or, have a bowl of prepared walnuts like these handy and have everyone take one and read their “fortune” out loud. The funnier the fortunes, the better.

For some people, December is the best time of year. Once the stuffing and turkey are gone, the Christmas tree goes up and the halls get decked. Some families go overboard and decorate every room of their home. It can be a lot of fun around this time, moving from room to room, going about your daily life, is a lot of fun surrounded by wreaths, snowmen, and Santas. A decorative environment helps build the excitement for the children, and it is a little like having a home makeover for one month or so out of the year. It can be an inexpensive way to jazz up your environment and brighten your mood. After the first of the year, you can tear down the décor and feel as if you have a brand new home. The problem with some homes is the decorations do not begin until the front door. Certain parts of the country can be frigid during the months of November and December, making the prospect of decorating outdoors unappealing. However, there are numerous things you can door that only take a few minutes and provide a big impact. If you live in a temperate climate where the sun shines year round, there is no excuse for not getting out there and jazzing up the outdoors just as you door inside. In either case, you can use sparkling landscape lights, or LED landscape lights to add a feeling of festivity to the outside of your home.

If you have a flair for decorating the indoors, there is no reason why that talent will not carry itself outdoors. Have a look around and determine if anything jumps out at your for holiday decorating. Is your property lined with pine trees or do you have one large tree in the center of the yard? It is begging to be your outdoor Christmas tree. Does the frame of your home have an interesting shape? Consider lining it with regular Christmas lighting or dangling icicle lighting. If you have numerous windows you would like to highlight, place an electric or battery-operated candle in each one and hang a green wreath with a big red bow just above each one. You can add a final larger wreath to the front door. If you have a large porch, decorate it as you would a room in your home. Search thrift stores and garage sales during the summer for an old-fashioned sleigh or sled that can be decorated with pine garland and red bows. You can also use poinsettia plans on the steps of the porch, creating a pathway to the home.

Decorating for the holidays is a great activity for the entire family to do together. If you have an outdoor living space in the back of the home, be sure to add a festive touch back there as well. Now might be a great time to add that fire pit you have been eyeing up. It adds a warm touch to outdoor Christmas décor and will still be great until the weather gets warmer. If you decorate during the holidays, go wild with outdoor decorating.

Does it ever seem that you wait all year long for your special holiday to arrive, maybe Thanksgiving or Christmas, only to have it come and go almost without truly enjoying the meaning of it. One of the cable television channels have a tradition that airs special movies for the twenty five days that are just prior to the actual holiday. What do you suppose would happen if you and your family were to choose a particular holiday that is especially important to you? It might just be a very good way to bring the whole family closer together. The United States of America is such a huge melting pot that is made up of a multitude of different nationalities. In this fast moving world of today, the family unit needs all of the help it can get in order to maintain the beliefs and customs that are such a big part of who we actually are.

It is a little difficult to specifically address each and every individual holiday; simply because there is so many that have very unique customs that are associated with them. Therefore let us concentrate on one that is acceptable, for the most part, to most people; that is Thanksgiving Day. Unfortunately, we do like to celebrate the day with a huge dinner, but we sometimes forget about the “thanksgiving” part. Unfortunately, the old tradition of everyone taking turns voicing in so many words exactly what they are grateful for has kind of faded away. It would be extremely rewarding if we could, once again, instill that feeling of gratitude into the whole family; especially the younger generations. Over the years many of our children have adopted an “I deserve it” attitude. This is not a good thing at all.

A simple thing like asking the whole family to volunteer at one of the local food kitchens that specialize in serving the poor people in the area is a great way for everyone to see with their own eyes just how blessed they really are. Helping to prepare the Thanksgiving dinner, serving it to the poor and homeless people and then actually wanting to hang around in order to assist with the entire clean up process can be compared to taking one giant step toward mankind.

Anyone and everyone can participate in this type of celebration. It does not matter who you are or where you came from. The only thing that counts is that you are grateful for what you have and want to show it by offering to unselfishly help another human being during their time of need. Thankfully, this is a custom that can be handed down from generation to generation.
