Gardening can be an extremely relaxing and enjoyable past time. This can be an extremely creative activity, which can add color and attractiveness to your home and yard. Gardening is not only tossing a few plants in to the ground, though. For the most gratification, as well as biggest results, you’ll perform some planning

To begin with you will be needs a container, you can purchase or build something to keep your compost pile. A wooden frame composed of new or scrap material in the corner of our yard will work perfect. Combine your scraps to it every day and stir it up 2 to 3 times each week. Plenty materials may be added onto a compost pile, this includes leaves, grass cuttings, hay, brush, vegetable and fruit leftovers, coffee grounds, livestock manure, sawdust, egg shells possibly even shredded paper.

Just like most living things your compost pile needs to have three things to achieve success…Air, Food and Water. All of these three areas produce ideal growing conditions to maintain a healthy sense of balance for those living microbes that break it down. A mixture of greens (as an example kitchen table scrapes, grass clippings, etc) those are the foods.

Browns (including straw, brush, sawdust, etc.) assist in keeping it oxygenated. And bacterias prefer a level of moisture of a wrung out sponge. In the event that it may be extremely wet your microorganisms just cannot breath and unfortunately your compost pile is likely to smell (like decaying garbage) simply because they simply cannot do their job. In the event that it is to dried out it’ll slow down the decomposition of your compost pile.

Your finished compost should be dark in color and will have an earthy odor (just like the aroma of soil). Most of the time, it’s difficult to recognize any of the initial materials, though portions of tough-to-decompose elements (such as straw) usually may be noticed.

Compost really does a number of things to help the soil that man-made or manufactured fertilizers can’t achieve. The natural and organic matter found in compost will help the way water interacts together with the soil. In sandy type soils, compost acts as a sponge to help the soil keep hold of water. In clay soils, compost really helps to aerate and increase porosity to the soil, making it drain more quickly it doesn’t remain waterlogged. Compost also inoculates the soil with helpful bacteria. These kinds of bacteria are able to acquire nourishing substances among the mineral part of the soil and eventually pass these rich nourishing substances on to your plants. And as a consequence nutrient rich soil would mean a beautiful yard as well as garden.

The art of bonsai tree growing takes many years to truly master. There are many instructions and techniques you will need to learn and applying these techniques correctly will have a massive affect on the health and beauty of your tree.

You will need to learn how to fertilize your plant properly. This happens naturally in the wild when dead plants and animals land and decompose near a plant. As they decompose they return their nutrients and nutrition back into the soil. If a plant is growing near this decomposing organism, it will now re-adsorb the dead organisms nutrients to help itself grow.

If you’ve got an indoor plant or a potted bonsai tree then this is less likely to occur naturally and so instead you’ll have to fertilize your plants manually. The best way to do this is by using naturally occurring fertilizers such as compost or manure. These can be obtained from your own garden or from neighbours. Alternatively you can buy fertilizer from gardening stores and they will perform an adequate job instead of using naturally occurring fertilizer. However, natural compost is better to use if possible.

You’ll want to master the art of cutting, pruning and trimming your plant. This will take a long time to learn as well. The first and most basic technique you’ll want to learn is how to pinch and twist off any new unwanted growths. This can be done by using your thumb and forefinger. Tools will be required if you wish to remove the larger branches smoothly. To do this properly you should cut into the branch very slightly so that when the growth heals it doesn’t bulge outwards too much. If the wound is too large then wood sealant should be applied which can be removed later on. This protects your tree from any bacterial or fungus infections.

Wiring is another skill you’ll have to master if you want to style your tree correctly. This can be achieved through the use of aluminium or copper wires. Gradually over the coming months and years the tree will grow into the correct shape that you have set your wires to. When removing the wires remember to cut them off and not unravel them as this can sometimes damage the trees branches.

Another skill is learning how to repot your plant properly. Depending on how fast you tree is growing you’ll probably need to do this every year or so. You’ll especially need to do this if the tree has become cramped or clogged due to excessive root growth. This will cause the air and water to stop circulating inside the soil, which can eventually kill the tree if the roots begin to rot. You can notice when a bonsai tree is being cramped or clogged because the soil will begin to rise outwards from the pot. Repotting should also occur as the trees size changes, however you must remember to still keep the pot small as the aim of bonsai tree growing is to grow the tree in miniature.

Finally, learning to water your tree really depends on the species that you have bought and the climate that you’re living in. Generally you just want to keep the soil moist so that the tree doesn’t dry out. This should be done with rainwater if possible but tap water is fine if you have not been able to collect any rain.

Careful soil preparation is always at the top of the pile in a vegetable garden design tips list. It takes a lot of effort and time involved in gardening and yet you can only know if you have been doing it right or wrong in at least a few weeks. So preparation and proper planning is critical, unless of course you want to learn through experience and you have time to spare.

Like they always say, learn from your experience but most importantly, learn from others’ mistakes.

Your garden spot must have at least 5-6 hours of sunshine everyday. Though it is nice to have your garden nearer to your house but please observe where the shades from your house gets to in the daytime. Take note also of shades coming from trees or tall bushes.

Remember no chemicals, spray or water can replace sunshine, so that would be your number one priority.

Next if your garden has already been cultivated before and used in the months before then there is not much to do other than to mix in additional organic material and fertilizers. The soil should be very fertile and with good irrigation. To check on this, make sure there is no water puddles forming after a douse of rain. Wet soil causes poor rooting.

Apart from good drainage, the soil should also be free of stones, rocks, sticks and other debris. When you are working and digging into your soil, please do only when it is dry or moist. Soils should not be worked on when it is wet as it will compact the soil when it gets dry.

To know if the soil is too wet, grab a handful and clasped your palm to make the soil stick together into a ball. If they stick and does not collapse when slight pressure is apply using your thumb and finger, that would mean they are too weak for working. A compacted soil will stop root from growing.

Be careful not to walk on the soil that you have already worked on or intend to work on, as your weight will compact them even more and requires more digging. Once you found your good soil, keep them on top of the sub-good soil. When manure is added to the soil, it must be composted prior to planting, because fresh, hot manure will also burn your plants.

Only after the site has been prepared, and the soil and conditioners mixed, watered well and settled should you test the pH of the soil. You will know that you are working with the wrong soil when you get poor crops and small harvest. The nonexistence of earth worms is also an indication that your soil is not suitable as vegetable garden soil.

Designing a small garden is an easy task and you will be surprised with the results you can achieve. Prepare a pencil and a piece of paper to start drawing a layout while reading the tips.

Choose and prepare a place – As you will grow limited amount of plants, you must provide good conditions to enjoy the rich harvest. Choose the most sunny spot in your backyard, as most vegetables need a lot of light.

You need a rich soil, as you will plant vegetables close to each other. For a small vegetable garden, the raised beds are a practical choice. Include the paths between them in your layout, so that you can easily reach the plants and avoid trampling them. Build 10 inches deep frames from wood, bricks or stones. Make them 3-4 feet wide. Combine the soil with compost and peat moss, then fill the frames with this mix.

Design layout for vegetables – Choose the varieties that will do well in your climate. Plant the tall crops on the north side of your garden to avoid shading of the other vegetables. The small ones should go south, the medium ones in the middle. Sun exposure is best when the rows of plants run from north to south. If you want to use the available space most efficiently, keep your garden full. Plant the later batch of crops between the rows 2-3 weeks before removing the mature vegetables.

If you use the raised beds again next year, plan your layout for crop rotation. This simple procedure will hinder some pests and diseases, as well as conserve nutrients in the soil. The rule is simple, just avoid growing similar plants in the same spot more often than once in 3 years.

When planning to squeeze many crops in the limited space, it is a good idea to consider companion planting. Some vegetables don’t grow well in the neighborhood of others. Don’t plant this crops close to each other: beans, peas and onion, tomatoes and broccoli, cabbage and strawberry, cucumber and strong herbs.

Plan for a good visual effect – Your small garden will look more interesting if you add the herbs or even flowers to the composition. They can lure the pollinating insects, improving harvest and adding a touch of life and color.

To improve space management add the containers in places where the raised boxes will not fit. Paths will look better and be more comfortable to walk if you add some decorative tiles or a layer of gravel.
